Classes & Workshops

“What we do in nature matters more than how long we spend in it. Research shows that noticing nature is more important than simply spending time in green places. People who watch wildlife, listen to birdsong, or take photos of nature feel closer to nature than those who don’t do these things.”

— Miles Richardson,  The Nature Connection Handbook

Feel free to be in contact with any questions, or if you are interested in any of the workshops listed below.

Through workshops, school collaborations, and community programs, Living Land Learn activates what might be called regenerative imagination. Participants engage directly with natural systems—making inks from plants, experimenting with biomaterials, foraging, observing birds, learning from fungi and fibers, and more—cultivating a sense of noticing and an awareness of interdependence and material cycles.

Artmaking By nature

During this 2-day workshop partially spent in the beautiful WSA woods, students bond with the land to forage seasonal plants, rocks, fungi and more to fabricate inks, paints and various art tools readily available to make art with, and make paper out of mushrooms. Activities encompass all aspects of art making, from practicing the art of noticing to sourcing materials to artistic expression. This science-infused art workshop invites experimentation without critique (watch the demo, try!) and reconnects participants to the natural environment as a resource for ancient ways of artistic expression.

printing bird songs

Using the Merlin Bird ID application, participants are guided to discover birds not by sight, but through their songs and calls. These enchanting sounds are then transformed into visual artworks inspired by the app’s spectrograms, using pre-made stamps and coloring tools. This family workshop welcomes participants of all ages to tune in, create, and deepen their awareness of the many birds that share our everyday environment, and their ecosystem.

climate cafes

A Climate Café offers a welcoming, nonjudgmental space where community members can share their feelings and responses to the climate crisis. Informal, inclusive, and non-political, it invites all voices without expecting any commitment to action. Climate Cafés hosted by Living Land Learn incorporate interactive tools and creative activities that support multiple forms of expression, making it easier for all to participate and be heard.

This program previously ran at the Fashion Institute of Technology, NY; White Feather Farm, Saugerties, NY; Shelburne Farm’s Climate Creative teacher workshop, VT, at the International School of Brooklyn, since 2022.

A FUTURIST MINDSET: RE-IMAGINING PLASTICs

The Futurist Mindset workshop engages teens and adults in an artistic exploration of bio-polymers, transforming anxiety about plastic pollution into creative agency through the making of bioplastics. Participants experiment with plant-based materials and reimagine their practical applications in everyday life. The program aims to cultivate a “possibilist” outlook—empowering teens and up to envision hopeful futures and take initiative in shaping them.

Program previously offered at the International School of Brooklyn, G6-8, 2024
