Conversation and Art About Climate Change at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
We chat while making art… here with my homemade bioplastic! The vibrant colors are plant inks.
What is bioplastic? It’s petroleum-free plastic, made from food-based ingredients like algae or gelatin, entirely compostable.
Dehydrated food waste can be integrated into these recipes to create biomaterials for many industries. Can you imagine all the banana peels or eggshells in a day being reprocessed into biomaterials? (@ottanstudio ; @youyang_song )
The plastic problem hasn’t been solved yet, but some scientists and designers are certainly working on it, creating circular systems to replace it. We’re not there yet, and
now is NOT the moment to shut down the research!!
Let’s fight for bio research and climate research.

Where there’s Kids and Climate, there’s Art in the middle.
And possibilities.
Children and Teens generally care and understand the problem with plastic. They feel sad and powerless in the face of plastic pollution. They feel anxiety. I run a middle school elective where the kids and I tackle this issue by creating art based on the hands-on exploration of bioplastics and biomaterials. We make them.
Our exploration of these ‘not plastics’ - entirely biodegradable and fossil fuel free - is energizing and uplifting, and it unveils a whole new awareness of possible future careers in design, art and science for a better future. More importantly, it is reassuring for the kids to know that adults around the world are re-imagining daily life. They feel less alone.
As an artist, I’m having a lot of fun with this. Posted are a few pieces currently exhibited at the Woodstock School of Art instructors’ show.
These are simple proposals, and they’re ephemeral, but what possbilities they open.

OMG. I urgently want to share this link to the Ceres Food Film Festival (in person NYC and FREE online viewing, available until Oct 25)
https://www.ceresfilmfestival.org/films
Incredible selection of short and long films on food, agriculture, food justice and food workers rights.
DO NOT MISS THIS!
The photo is in my own kitchen, with Quentin and two friends making dinner last weekend. Stuffed tomatoes and peppers.
Tradition is in our house that sleepover parties with many kids = cooking teams! The result is our Friends and Family Cookbook in the making, celebrating foods from all over and many memories to share….
Food connects.

To all my printmakers fellows: go see this exhibition today if you haven’t seen it yet - TODAY!
Closing at 5 today at the Dorsky Museum in New Palz: Benjamin Wigfall and the Communications Village. Historical yet current, and simply gorgeous.
‘Wigfall’s upbringing and education in Richmond and Hampton, Virginia, deeply informed his decision to address the inequities of access to art education. While a professor at the State University of New York, New Paltz, he intentionally established his studio in a close-knit Black neighborhood in nearby Kingston that reminded him of his childhood community in Richmond’s Church Hill. There, he opened his studio to nearby youth. His practice as a printmaker quickly merged with his philosophy as an arts educator, and Communications Village became a place for both art making and mentoring.’
Karine and I dropped off our scarecrow at the Comeau for the Woodstock Land Conservancy - if you’re not already there, run!
Then go to Karine’s Food Forest Opening and on the way, stop at the WSA alumni show opening!

Purslane, bee balm, wood sorrel and more provide wild flavors on all foods cooked and devoured at the Cooking With Nature camp …and it’s all hands on deck to create new pasta shapes! ahhh the taste of lettuce freshly picked. We are so grateful for the fresh farm bounty that awaits us every day! thank you @whitefeatherfarmny
Last call for the Cooking with Nature workshop for youth beginning next Monday @whitefeatherfarmny! 5 beautiful days outside roaming the woods, the orchard and farmed land in search of edibles. Looking forward to lots of fun harvesting, tasting, creating and chewing - there is still space! https://www.whitefeatherfarm.org/2021-day-camps. #safeforaging, #LivingLandLearn, #gratitudefortheland #creativecooking #hudsonvalleycamp
Magic happened in many forms at the Arts in the Woods camp @ the White Feather Farm…as in musical vibrations, with Kris our very special in-house musician/plant expert! Then the land gave us color to paint with - ochres and umbers, charcoal black, mulberry purple - and matter, to shape things with. And so much to feel and look at! Next camp is at the Woodstock School of Art next week. Calling all teens to come and connect with nature! https://woodstockschoolofart.org/course/artmaking-by-nature/ @whitefeatherfarmny @_woodstockschoolofart
Camp starting tomorrow! very excited with the potential of the mulberries fallen on the ground - that pinkish ink so fun to mix …and so yummy smelling! Many more nature mysteries await us.
At the White Feather Farm this Week and next (7 to 10 and 10 to 12 year-olds) then at the Woodstock School of Art for a teen workshop - there is still space!
Spring foraging is on! I always look forward to my first dandelion salad (here, with wild chive and tender mustard greens) for celebrating nature’s awakening, a family ritual. Consider enjoying these beautiful ‘weeds’ - as pollinators do, and need - before cutting your grass...
3rd picture: the ‘pediatric adolescent diet’ meal served to Quentin during his stay at the hospital this week as a GI patient 😳whaaa? (he is doing great now, no worries)
