Artmaking By Nature
A creative, science-infused outdoor art workshop. The goal of this workshop is to provide inspiration and opportunity for art making while igniting curiosity and fostering an enduring bond with the land. Turning to the bounty of the land for artistic exploration has the potential to bring a sense of wonder, gratitude, and a feeling of empowerment with one’s own creativity.
In this workshop, participants learn to source natural elements for the fabrication of art materials, and begin practicing with these materials for art making. Activities include:
ink-making, tempera paint making, plant printing, nature journaling, paper making and more.
While immersed in
nature, participants are encouraged to emulate the indigenous practice of gratitude, care and stewardship of the land. In reciprocity, nature welcomes all, opening minds and creating optimum conditions for personal creative fulfillment.
Cooking With Nature
This culinary workshop, taking place at the beautiful White Feather Farm, in Saugerties, NY, focuses on exploring nature’s edible bounty while reflecting on ways to avoid food waste. Participants learn to forage safe edible plants from the farm’s woods and marshes and use
farm-sourced produce to cook simple dishes using a minimalist approach to ingredients. They experiment with seasonal flavors and textures to create their own culinary dishes, reflect on
the basic nutritious values of food, and discover how usually discarded parts of vegetables can inspire delicious dishes. And best of all, they all share in the culinary creativity and resulting feast!
The Re-Papermill
STEAM-focused, this paper-making and recycling workshop encourages awareness of the consequences of paper waste, and fosters transdisciplinary learning. Depending on the age group and number of sessions, learning opportunities might include: discovering the science
and history of paper, making recycled paper sheets, making paper from natural elements, using hand-made paper for a wide range of artistic techniques and purposes, fabricating your own mould and deckle, etc.
In a broader sense, this workshop hopes to create a meaningful connection with primary materials and to foster an empirical, in-depth knowledge of objects and materials in our surroundings.
